I heard of an interesting assignment that a few culinary schools in the area were trying. When they noticed the students were being overly critically of each other, they assigned each student a number. Each student made a dish. They held a tasting. Then each student was required to write about the best and the worst dish they tasted. They couldn’t just say they liked it or that they hated it. They had to describe in an in depth fashion as to what the liked or disliked. The assignment was a huge success. It made them all savor each individual item and kept them from making snap judgments about each other’s work. It also cut down on the number of complaints overall and made it easier for the instructors to weed out the most consistently good or bad reviews. Prizes were awarded for the worst and the best dishes as well as the reviews.
